Digitizing Music, Part 1: CDs

Updated: Feb 17, 2020

If you plan to use a music player for your relative that requires digital files, you will need to digitize your family member's music. The most common source for music, aside from online free archives, is CDs. Most people have them and your relative's CD collection can be a good indicator of what music they really like.

Step 1: Find CDs Your Relative Enjoys

The easiest way to do this is to simply ask them for music. If they are non-verbal, this task can be a bit more difficult. Ideally, your family member owns some CDs that you can easily access in order to digitize. If not, you will need to purchase some.

Step 2: Use a Computer to Digitize

If your computer has a CD drive, then this process will be very simple. Just put each CD into your computer and allow it to copy the contents of the CD to your computer. If your computer does not have a CD drive, you can easily purchase an external drive to use. Simply plug it into your computer through a USB port and insert the CD. Copying the files may take some time, so do not close your computer during the process.

(Optional step): File Conversion

Depending on the brand of your computer, you may need to convert your newly digitized files into the compatible file type for you music device. I have an Apple laptop, so I had to convert all of the files from mp4 to mp3 files. There are many websites and applications that allow you to upload and convert files. I used https://online-audio-converter.com/.

Step 3: Add Files to Device

From here, connect the device to your computer via the cord which came with the device (usually a USB cord) and simply drag and drop the files into the appropriate folder.

Congratulations, you have just digitized your CDs and prepared your music device for your relative!
